NHS Development Corporation (NHSDC) is a subsidiary of Neighborhood Housing Services of Jamaica (NHSJ). Our mission is to ensure the long-term economic stability of our community by providing affordable housing and other economic development opportunities to low-and moderate-income households.

Due to the severe housing crisis, NHSJ decided to renew its focus on affordable housing, by reactivating its Development Corporation. As many of us know, the recent foreclosure crisis, coupled with Super Storm Sandy, resulted in many dilapidated and abandoned properties in our community. Left unaddressed, our neighborhoods would erode, becoming places where blight flourishes and property values decline.

This new reality calls for focused strategies to restore some of these properties so that they could be sold at affordable prices to low-and moderate- Utilizing subsidies from New York State Homes and Community Renewal and New York State Affordable Housing Corporation, along with donations and support from our partnering banks, foundations and local elected officials, we are able to purchase properties, rehab and sell them to low-and moderate-income households at affordable prices. Many New Yorkers spend more than one-third of their incomes for housing costs, and at NHSDC, we strive to help alleviate this housing burden. Our small team of experienced staff members facilitates and executes development projects that keep our underlying values of professionalism, community involvement and a commitment to utilizing green and energy efficient technologies at the forefront of what we do.

NHSDC’s goal is to acquire and renovate properties in partnership with government and the private sector. One of the recent projects that we completed is a gut-rehab of a two-family property that we outfitted with a new roof, windows, floors, siding and stainless steel appliances. We purchased this property from Star of the Sea, another nonprofit organization, layered it with subsidies and sold it to a moderate-income family at a very affordable price. At the ribbon-cutting ceremony last June, the homeowner was quoted as saying, "I cannot explain how good we feel for being able to buy our dream home – I don’t know what we would have done if we did not find out about Neighborhood Housing Services."

In partnership with The Arker Companies and Slate Property Group, we are co-developing an 89-unit affordable, new construction hi-rise apartment building. This Workforce Development Housing Project will create affordable rental-units with ground floor retail space and amenities. We expect to break ground within a couple of months. We are extremely excited to be able to bring this vital resource to the community to help solve some of the housing crisis in Southeast

The Real Estate Resource Center acts as a clearinghouse to provide resources for tenants and homeowners to assist them with fulfilling their goals:

  • At NHSDC, we are committed to making a positive difference in our community and we are confident that with the support of our Partners and Local Elected Officials, we will do just that.
